Lt. Commander Edward “ Butch” O’Hare US Navy. February 20, 1942 (just 2.5 months after Pearl Harbor) O’Hare bravely took on 9 Japanese “ Betty” bombers headed to attack his aircraft carrier. With his Grumman F-4F-3 Wildcat of the famous ( Felix the Cat squadron) and shot down 5, instantly making him an Ace, as well as the first naval aviator to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor in WWII.
Butch was killed in action a year and a half later while leading the Navy’s first night time raid from a carrier. Chicago O’Hare International Airport was re-named after him in 1949.
